Roman Kofman | Orchestra

Since the 2003/2004 season, Roman Kofman has been GMD with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn. One of Kofman's first projects in this position was the 2003-2006 Shostakovich cycle. Up to the end of the 2005/2006 season, he had performed all of the Soviet composer's fifteen symphonies with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and recorded them for Dabringhaus + Grimm's MDG label on SACD. The recording of Symphony no.7 was hailed by The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs, a standard reference work of classical music recordings, as a "key recording" and "an excellent performance and recording in every sense". For his recording of Franz Liszt's Oratorio Christus he was awarded the Echo Klassik 2007 and for his recording of Valentin Silvestrov's 6th Symphony the Dutch magazine LUISTER gave him its highest accolade.
Since 1990 Roman Kofman has also been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Kiev Chamber Orchestra, which has now joined the ranks of world-class ensembles. He has also served the Warsaw National Opera as guest conductor. At the beginning of the 1990s he founded the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine together with his pupil Nikolai Diadiura. After an initial tour of the west with the State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Roman Kofman was invited to conduct leading western orchestras for concerts and CD recordings (including the orchestras of Bavarian Radio, Saarland Radio, West German Radio, Central German Radio; the Munich Philharmonic, the Berne Symphony Orchestra and the Flanders Festival with the National Orchestra of Brussels). He has conducted 63 orchestras worldwide in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Famous soloists like Gidon Kremer, with whom he and the Munich Philharmonic recorded Valentin Silvestrov's Violin Concerto for Teldec, have worked with him. In the spring of 2002 Kofman was awarded the "German Record Critics' Prize" (04/2001) for his recording of Tchaikovsky's opera arias with Julia Varady and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra.
In 1999 Roman Kofman was voted "Man of the Year" for his outstanding contribution to the field of culture in Ukraine. In summer 2003 Roman Kofman was awarded the highest artistic honour in his homeland of "People's Artist of Ukraine".

In April 2008, the German ambassador in Kiev, Reinhard Schäfers, bestowed on the world-famous Kiev conductor Roman Kofman the Federal Republic's highest honour, the "Verdienstkreuz I. Klasse" (Order of Merit). This honour expressed Germany's thanks to a personality who has made a significant contribution to German-Ukrainian relations.
"Roman Kofman has contributed, as a conductor of music, to acquainting people with eastern European and Ukrainian music in Germany and is at the same time o e of the most significant performers of German classical music in the Ukraine. In addition, he has brought the two countries and their citizens closer through his personal initiatives and humanitarian commitment. He is therefore in a true sense a bridge builder between our two countries, who has set a fine example with his great humanitarianism. By bestowing on him the honour of the Order of Merit, the Federal Republic of Germany wishes to mark Roman Kofman's commitment."
